All Saints Day Activities with Printable Cards

This Sunday is All Saints Day and I've had a great time putting these cards together for our all age service. Click here to download and print them off.  I'm aiming to use them in a few different ways...

Each card shows a saint, a brief description of who they are, the date they are remembered and what/ where they are the patron saint of. I've gone for some local saints to Britain and tried to make a balanced male/female ratio.

1. Print them onto card and play snap
2. Print them onto card and lay them face down. Take turns to find pairs.
3. Use the internet to find out more about the saints. What are the symbols you see with each saint and what do they mean?
4. Group the saints according to what you notice e.g. royalty, animals, places. What are common themes?

In the service, each person will be given one of the cards at random and we'll allocate a few minutes for googling and finding out more! We will talk about Saints being people who have lived out their faith and have often inspired others in their faith journeys, getting people to think and talk about these questions:
  • Which of these saints inspires you?
  • Who do you know who has helped and inspired you on your journey with God?
  • How would you like to live in a way that will help to inspire others in their faith?

Button Prayers

If you are looking for an active, kinaesthetic, way of praying in a small group or even with the whole congregation, then this might be for you! You will need: A collection of buttons of different shapes, sizes and colours- at least one button for each person praying. Give everyone a button. Feel the hardness of the button and think about people who are going through hard times.  Ask God to help them. Buttons are used to fasten clothes together.  Ask God to bring together people who have fallen out and moved apart from each other.  Pray that He will bring peace. Look at your button and see how many holes it has.  Think of that number of things you would like to say thank you to God for and say Thank you prayers. Look at the colour of the button and say thank you to God for something that is that colour  Find someone who has the same colour button as you.  You might want to make a small group of people with the...

Trusting God: The Amazing Water Glass Trick!

I used this idea in an assembly yesterday, focussing on people we trust and what it means to trust God.   This would work really well if you are exploring miracle stories or stories about trust.  Suitable verses to use with it might be:  Joshua 1:9: Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the  Lord  your God will be with you wherever you go.” Psalm 56: 3  When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. John 14: 1  Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me  I have to admit that this trick is not an original idea.  I found the trick in this book:  Simple Science Object Talks by Heno Head Jnr  and would definitely recommend getting cold of a copy if you can! You will need: A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled) and an index card. This is what you do: place the index card over the top of the glass, making sure that the whole of the rim is covered by it, and press...

The Lord's Prayer: Crafts, games and prayer activities

On Saturday, Powersource explored the Lord's Prayer, looking creatively at every section.  Here's how we broke it down and what we did.  Some activities have links to posts which will explain in more detail.  Please note that we had a 3 hour session so that's how we fitted so much in! Warm up- Order the Lord's prayer ( how much can you remember?).  Prayer printed out and cut into strips, mixed up so they can be put in the correct order.  We made this a race! Our Father in Heaven:   Heaven collage  (a whole group project)   Hallowed be your name: Names of God dominoes   (discussing the many names of God and what they mean to us). Your Kingdom come:   Kingdom of God orbs .  When we finished we put them on a world map to symbolise God's sovereignty over the world.  The children then insisted we arrange them into a cross shape.  They have really got into using symbols in prayer!   Your...
